LIVE SHOW NEWS: Unpredictability of human road users remains biggest challenge to AVs, claims Fusion Processing

Fusion Processing (Stand AV5007) CEO, Jim Hutchinson believes that the situational awareness of AVs is a major challenge, due to the unpredictability of other road users.

“We certainly saw some interesting happenings in Greenwich, when we did the Gateway project,” said Hutchinson on the second day of Autonomous Vehicle Technology World Expo. “We saw the full range of behaviours, from indifference – which is a lot of the time – to recklessness. There is still quite a lot of education to be done. Modern AVs may have hugely improved reaction times, but they still have to stop in time.”

Another trend highlighted by Hutchinson is the sheer variety of companies getting involved with AV development: “There’s a general increase in companies wanting to become involved in AVs in some way, including companies you wouldn’t necessarily expect, but who see it as a potential growth area, even though AVs are not similar to what they normally do. Initially, it was mostly tech companies, who already had relevant technology.”
