Crowdsourced road condition data

To get around the problem of sourcing expensive road condition data for AVs, Nira Dynamics has developed its Road Surface Information platform, which uses only a software package and the sensors already in cars to gather vital road information such as friction, road roughness, potholes and road bumps.
It fuses data from all the sensors already on the vehicle and sends it to the cloud to create continually updated map layers for any road segment with descriptive or even predictive information. These can then be used to increase driver – or AV – awareness through warnings about slippery conditions and weather-based navigation data.
