Sustainability in environmental simulation test chambers for AVs
Weiss Technik / Weiss Technik North America

Visit Weiss Technik’s booth to find out more about the company’s pre-engineered and custom chamber solutions for the autonomous vehicle industry – EV/hybrid, battery, SHED, temperature and humidity applications – as well as to see its solutions for sensors and autonomous vehicle applications. The company offers a complete portfolio of chambers including reach-in, walk-in/drive-in, thermal shock, corrosion, vibration, emissions and UV, among others.

Environmental simulation test chambers are used to test a variety of products across multiple market sectors, including circuit boards, laptops, jet engine components, natural and synthetic fabrics, and even entire hybrid/electric vehicles. R-404A and similar refrigerants have been used in environmental simulation test chambers to enable optimum performance. However, it has been determined that these have a high global warming potential (GWP). Consequently, domestic and international regulations such as the United States American Innovation and Manufacturing Act (AIM Act), European Union Regulation No. 517/2014, and the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol have aimed to phase out these types of compounds. The United States EPA’s hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) phasedown objective is to reduce HFC production and consumption by 85% over the next 15 years, starting in 2022.

It is anticipated that R-404A will see a global price increase and reduced availability in the coming year. More stringent future standards and regulations are also expected. As customers need an alternative, Weiss Technik North America Inc has been investigating low-GWP refrigerants.

The company is the first environmental test chamber manufacturer to apply low-GWP (global warming potential) R-449A refrigerants in all its test chambers that formerly used R-404A. According to the company, its 64% lower GWP value is greatly beneficial for the environment and helps support customers’ corporate and federal sustainability programs.

Meet product and application engineers from Weiss Technik at ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle Technology Expo in San Jose to see how the company’s complete chamber portfolio can meet your testing requirements.
