Unbiased urban traffic simulation
Automotive Artificial Intelligence (AAI)

At Autonomous Vehicle Technology Expo in Hannover, AAI will show off its ReplicaR Intelligent Traffic module for urban traffic simulation. In simulation tools that have been established on the market thus far, each road user must be parameterized by the simulation engineer. This is a lot of effort, and the naturalistic occurrence of endurance runs can be affected by the bias of the simulation engineer.

With AAI Intelligent Traffic, every traffic agent has its own derived driver behavior model with a decision-making process. Apart from a few initial settings, the simulation engineers do not need to make any further configuration and therefore no further interventions in the naturalistic events of endurance runs are possible. Thus, AAI Intelligent Traffic offers an efficient way to test automated driving functions and sensors in simulation that comes very close to the real traffic situation on real roads.

In addition to motorways and country roads, the latest version of AAI Intelligent Traffic supports urban environments. To this end, the existing behavioral models for cars, buses, trucks and motorcycles have been expanded and new models have been added for cyclists, pedestrians and trams. This results in complex and realistic scenarios in urban areas as well.

The basis for all decisions made by automated driving systems is the correct perception of the environment and the road users moving in it. For more complex driving functions, the demands on the reliability of the sensors and algorithms used for this also increase. The use of a realistic sensor simulation can significantly reduce the effort and thus costs for the data-based development and protection of such systems. AAI ReplicaR offers an accurate 3D environment including physical information on the textures and materials of all objects. This enables a realistic simulation of the camera, lidar and radar sensors. With the appropriate sensor models and tools from AAI, these can be integrated into the development process.
