Sensor fusion in the lab
dSPACE Inc

To develop and validate environment sensors for autonomous systems, the raw data captured by the sensors has to be fed to sensor ECUs in a synchronized manner to enable the validation of perception and sensor fusion algorithms in the lab. This is what the dSPACE Environment Sensor Interface (ESI) Unit was designed to do.

The ESI Unit takes the raw digital data that is captured by one or more environment sensors, separates it, and then feeds it into relevant camera, radar and lidar ECUs, as well as central processing units, to enable hardware-in-the-loop simulation testing, in both closed- and open-loop scenarios.

The ESI Unit supports all relevant sensor interfaces. A single ESI Unit can stimulate up to eight sensors synchronously and supports more than 50Gbit/s of aggregated bandwidth. By combining multiple ESI Units, users can test functions for autonomous driving with dozens of different sensors.
